When approached to play the first NEARFest (North East Art Rock Festival 1999) we decided to prove to ourselves it was still possible to play all new music from scratch. With our new Excelsior! album just released and in the midst of recording our next album, Angels of the Apocalypse, it made sense to give this material a shot live. An excellent way to show how it all fits together (prog, fusion, metal) and a new musical challenge to satisfy the musical adventurers in us.

With Jens away on tour with Stratovarius, and having become good friends with Mickey Simmonds on the 1997 Fish tour, we invited him along and put him to the task. Three days rehearsing all new material never performed live, and out the door we went on a short tour that climaxed at NEARFest 1999. Herein are recordings and images captured of a fresh and vital Mastermind during probably the hottest summer (leather & sweat) of the last decade of the 20th Century... it was great!
